Overcoming a setback - Knee Surgery
19th November 2015
"Every struggle in your life has shaped you into the person you are today"
Life is a journey where things are not bound to go as planned and it is your belief, perseverance and optimism that will help you get over these hurdles. It was on 6th May 2015 when I took the courage to cross a road block that threatened my pole vaulting career.
Pole vault is a high intensity sport, which involving a lot of strain & impact on the back, hip and knees. Practicing this sport for over half a decade had taken its toll on my knees causing excruciating pain that would force me to limp & make it impossible to train. On digging into the cause of this pain, multiple issues surfaced, where the major culprit was Patellar Tendinitis, Hoffa's Pad thickening and Chondromalacia Patella. On hearing this I was shattered, as I understood the depth of the situation with my medical background. It was clear to me that surgery was the only way I would get back on the field.
With Sports injuries, it is a challenge to find a skilled sports Orthopaedician with the experience and expertise in treating such injuries. I was fortunate to meet Dr. Jagadeesh at Fortis Hospital, who performed an arthroscopic surgery on my knee. A followup challenge is to find a good physiotherapist who could compliment the surgery and assist you though the rehab. Nadeem Shariff helped me though this phase.
With God's grace I am vertical on my knees and back training to achieve my dream.
